How Effective are IoT-Based Biometrics?

As we are now reaching a high point in our technological advancement, it’s clear that every aspect of our lives is somehow influenced by technology nowadays. This includes the field of security. When you say security and technology, one thing that we can associate with these two is biometrics.

Biometrics is basically one way of securing an identity, data, or information with the use of computer systems. However, when you integrate the Internet of Things with this, it becomes a whole new story. Today, we are aware of how beneficial IoT is when you add it to your systems. But when it comes to integrating this to security, how effective is it?

The Rise of the Internet of Things

We can never deny the exponential growth of IoT. Since its inception, the number of devices that are connected to the internet has been consistently growing. With this being said, the need to provide a bullet-proof security measure arises.

In fact, by the time we reach 2020, the number of connected devices will reach up to 50 billion as stated in a report conducted by Cisco. In just a short span, the growth in IoT is undeniably fast.

Meshing IoT in Biometrics

As mentioned above, IoT is branching out in a lot of fields and is taking over the internet system. In terms of security, meshing up biometric devices with IoT is a promising idea. Currently, traditional biometrics are often expressed through login passwords for authentication. While this method is somehow effective and is still used today, it doesn’t coincide with the advancement we observe from the Internet of Things.

Because technology is evolving every day, IoT is now introduced in biometric devices. This needs to be addressed and both should be improved and integrated. The traditional biometrics such as passwords are easily compromised. Sure, there are preventive measures like two-factor authentication, but it surely is an inconvenience for the users most of the time.

As there are shortcomings in traditional security means, the need to integrate IoT-based biometric devices is acknowledged. Thus exploring new ways to improve these authentication processes for more accuracy and fewer threats.

How Effective are IoT-based Biometric Devices

As the internet system is a sophisticated ecosystem of processes, it’s no wonder why we require security measures to prevent fraudulent activities here. Hence, a biometric device should be installed and be enhanced with IoT for extra measures. However, is an IoT-based biometric device effective on the internet system in the long run? Here are some points to consider:

  • Less Human Intervention

A biometric device with lesser human intervention is much more beneficial when you want that no human dependency is going to be observed. What makes this effective is that there would be no room for prejudices since humans are prone to these feelings as well.

If you are to focus solely on human intervention to deal with security, there is a high likelihood that it will be cheated or abused, and there would be plenty of inconsistencies observed. With IoT-based biometrics, technology is used as the main source of security, making it much more accurate and consistent.

  • Less Room for Errors

As mentioned above, IoT-based biometrics are consistently following an objective set of systems and algorithms. This makes this method less likely to malfunction because its authentication process is secured and not easily replicated.

  • Less Cost in the Long Run

Let’s acknowledge that traditional biometrics are indeed cheaper. However, while IoT-based biometrics cost more initially compared to the former. We can never deny that it’s beneficial and cost-effective in the long run.

We’ve established that IoT-based biometrics have a lesser chance of failing, so this means that you will never have to deal with cost management. Nonetheless, before installing these IoT devices, you should meticulously dissect which programs, algorithms, and systems you really need. This is an essential step because although it helps you save in the long run, you need to do your research to avoid unnecessary expenses.

The level of convenience, accuracy, reliability, and security of IoT-based biometrics is irrefutably high. Thus, we can surely say that while integrating this may not be compulsory, it definitely is beneficial and helpful for us.
