This tape-measure-style measuring device went from a concept sketch to a fully engineered CAD assembly: internal mechanism, housing with split lines and draft, and drawings a molder could quote from.

The challenge

Using photos and some hand sketches of the prototype, our CAD design company was challenged to create a manufacturing-ready 3D CAD model and 2D drawings of an innovative tape measure device (Patent US 9,188,418 B2). The main challenge of this project was the absence of many essential dimensions.

Our solution

We approached this CAD project by designing each part individually and then arranging all of them into an assembly. We had to use references, calculate and simply approximate some dimensions that have not been provided by the customer. We introduced several modifications to the design of the prototype according to customer’s requests. Since there were no solid requirements of how some elements were supposed to look we iterated the design cycle with the customer until a complete satisfaction was achieved.

The result

Our CAD design company delivered a 3D CAD model, 2D drawings, and 3D renderings of the tape measure design. The results of our work will help the inventors to transition their product from prototyping to manufacturing. With stunning photo-realistic renderings they are now also more equipped for marketing the product and bringing investors on board

The problem: an idea that no shop could quote

Sketches and a physical mock-up are not manufacturable. Before anyone can print, machine or mould a part, someone has to make the decisions CAD forces: wall thickness, draft, fits, fastener choices, assembly order and tolerances. That is the work a CAD design company is actually hired for.

What we delivered

We built a fully parametric model so dimensions stay editable as the design changes, produced dimensioned drawings a machine shop can quote from, and exported prototype-ready geometry. Because the model carries feature history, later revisions cost hours instead of a rebuild.

What a CAD design company actually delivers

Files are the output; decisions are the product. Here is what should be inside a professional CAD deliverable.

  1. 1. Model the mechanism before the shell

    Hand tools live or die on their internals. We engineered the measuring mechanism first, then designed the housing around it — so the enclosure never compromises how the tool works.

  2. 2. Design the housing as molded parts

    Every wall gets a thickness, every outside face gets draft, and the split line is chosen so the tool opens cleanly. A CAD model without these is a rendering with an .stl extension.

  3. 3. Tolerance the interfaces that matter

    Buttons, blade exits and mating halves get called-out tolerances; everything else floats. Over-tolerancing doubles tooling cost for zero functional gain.

  4. 4. Prove it physically before tooling

    We 3D printed the assembly so the client could feel the grip, run the mechanism and catch ergonomic issues while changes were still free.

How much does CAD design for a product cost?

A single-part consumer product typically runs $2,000 to $8,000 for manufacturing-ready CAD; multi-part assemblies with mechanisms run more. The price driver is engineering content, not modeling time.

What files should I receive from a CAD designer?

Native parametric files (SolidWorks or similar), neutral STEP exports, and dimensioned PDF drawings for anything that will be quoted to a factory.

Can a CAD model be used directly for prototyping?

If it was built with real wall thicknesses and assemblies, yes — the same files drive 3D printing. Visual-only models usually have to be rebuilt first.
