PRODUCT DISCOVERY

If you’ve ever had to write a paper for school, you know that getting started is the hardest part. That’s true of many types of projects. Home improvement projects, creative projects, and work projects all seem daunting when you’re just getting started. The same is true of product development. The first stage of idea development is often one of the hardest parts, especially since the process might seem overwhelming at first. Our new solution, product discovery, is designed to lay a solid foundation for each project, whether it’s software or hardware development. This service is a chance to work through idea development with experienced professionals who can provide valuable perspectives on what to do with a product idea.

Define Your Idea

Ideas are like plants. They start as seeds, undefined, and undeveloped. If planted and nurtured, they can grow to become more sophisticated and gain value. Idea development is like taking care of a seed so that it can live up to its full potential.

Considering an idea from different perspectives and making improvements as you go during product discovery helps it become more defined.

A clear definition gives you knowledge of what to do with a product idea, a vision for your long-term goals, and security in your project’s feasibility. Additionally, formalizing the idea can help you communicate your thoughts more clearly. This can come helpful when you discuss your product with others, such as potential business partners or investors.

SAVE TIME & MONEY

One of the largest benefits of product discovery is that it includes strategic planning, saving time, and money in the long term. Developing a new product can entail a significant investment of both, especially if your product is complex or requires inventing a technology.

The product discovery stage is a chance to plan to make sure that you invest wisely to build a sustainable business. Additionally, idea development provides a clear direction that can reduce risk and cost.

If you have developed a product before and understand all the ins and outs of product aesthetics, functionality, user experience, market research, and your target audience, you may have everything you need to begin concept design. However, we recommend product discovery even to experienced product developers. This is because better planning beforehand will limit revisions in the later concept design and prototyping phases and increase your chances for success.

Learn About the Process

Product discovery is also an opportunity to learn about what comes next for your product. It’s a chance to seek advice and figure out how you can maximize your idea’s potential by answering questions like:

  • What is your market niche?
  • What opportunities does your idea present? What risks?
  • What product commercialization options are available to you?
  • Who are your competitors? What are their strengths and weaknesses?
  • Are any similar products already patented?

This is the perfect time to ask any questions you may have about your product’s development. Product discovery is all about learning, so be sure to voice any questions or concerns and have no fear of sounding silly or uninformed. We encourage our clients to seek new information and make the most out of our team’s expertise. The information you will acquire during Discovery will be specific to your project and goals. You will finish this stage having made concrete steps forward on your product development journey.

Making the Most of Product Discovery

Before you meet with us in person or via a video chat for product discovery, brainstorm beforehand. Come with ideas about yours and your company’s goals, desired product features, and what you want to get out of this process. When you arrive, communicate your ideas to our team as clearly as possible. Examples and visuals are always welcome.

Our product development company wants to understand your vision so that we can provide the service you need. So, ask us to articulate our understanding of the vision you’ve shared throughout the process, especially when a new draft or piece of information is introduced. This is a great way to make sure that we are all on the same page.

Your Product Development Tool-Kit

During this process, you will receive:

  • up to 4 hours of consultations and brainstorming sessions with our product development and marketing experts
  • a prior art and competition analysis from our market research specialists
  • product sketches for a pre-CAD visual representation
  • a detailed scope of work
  • the Realizr notebook, our proprietary tool for product development

How It Works

The following is an outline of our procedure, which typically takes two to three weeks:

  • Discovery Packet: Once you’re ready to begin product discovery, we will send you a packet with the Realizr and other essential tools and materials. We will then schedule our Kick-Off Meeting (in-person or via a video call).
  • In between receiving the packet and the Kick-Off Meeting or Call, consult the information in our brochure to brainstorm and think of questions you may want to ask later.
  • Kick-Off Meeting/Video Call: Here, we touch base to discuss the next step and walk you through the idea development process in the Realizr. If you have any questions, share them at this meeting. We will take notes of your questions and our answers to email you later.
  • In between the first and second meetings, we will conduct some market research. In the meantime, continue sending us pictures of drawings and notes in your Realizr as your idea evolves.
  • Meeting/call 2: We will go over what you’ve developed as well as what we’ve discovered in our initial market research.
  • Product Description: Together, we will craft a product description, which will be sent to our sketch artist.
  • In between the next meetings, we will send you our sketch artist’s work. Once it has your approval, the sketches will be sent to our prior art search expert. In the meantime, we’ll keep in touch so you can begin developing some branding choices (company name, for example).
  • Meeting/calls 3-4: Discuss the results of the prior art search and ways optimizing the initial idea concept to fit in the current market.

Once you’ve approved the final design, the Discovery stage is complete, and your fully developed idea is ready for the next phase of product development, concept design.
