Short answer

Strategic product discovery to turn innovative ideas into products. Define, validate, and plan your concept with expert guidance.

What Is Product Discovery and Why It Matters

Product Discovery is the essential first step in transforming an idea into a product. It’s the process of figuring out what your product needs to be, why it matters, and how to bring it to life.

Rather than jumping into design or engineering too early, discovery helps ensure that your time, budget, and effort are spent wisely.

At LA NPDT, we use Product Discovery to uncover your idea’s technical feasibility, market viability, and long-term potential.

Whether you’re planning to pursue investment, file a patent, or launch a startup, discovery gives you the clarity, confidence, and strategy to move forward with purpose.

Think of it as your foundation.

Product Discovery gives you the insight, clarity, and confidence to shape your idea into something that works, technically, economically, and for your users.

Our Product Discovery Process: From Vision to Strategy

Our Product Discovery process is designed to turn early-stage ideas into well-defined, technically grounded, and market-aligned product concepts. We combine deep research, technical evaluation, and early design thinking to create a clear path from concept to execution.

Every engagement is custom-tailored, but most include:

  • 01

    Market Research

Understand your audience, trends, and competitors.

  • 02

Prior Art & IP Landscape Analysis

Identify patent risks and white space.

  • 03

    Technical Feasibility Review

    Explore materials, technologies, and constraints.

  • 04

    Regulatory & Compliance Mapping

    Assess industry-specific requirements.

  • 05

    Feature Definition & Functional Requirements

Clarify what your product must do and why.

  • 06

    Cost & Timeline Estimates

Get a realistic view of what it will take.

  • 07

    Initial Sketches & Concept Visuals

Early product representations to shape design direction.

  • 08

    Development Roadmap

A step-by-step plan for what comes next.

Product Discovery doesn’t slow you down it gives you the map before you start driving.

Why Product Discovery Is the Smartest Place to Start

Jumping into product design or engineering too early often leads to wasted time, money, and misaligned expectations. Product Discovery gives you the clarity to avoid false starts and the confidence to move forward with purpose.

Whether you’re applying for a grant, preparing to pitch investors, or just exploring the real potential of your idea, discovery helps you answer critical questions before major commitments are made.

  • Avoid costly mistakes by validating assumptions early
  • Identify potential issues before investing significant resources
  • Understand technical and market risks before investing in development
  • Get a clear picture of challenges and opportunities
  • Strengthen investor pitches with credible research and visuals
  • Back your idea with solid data and professional concept representations
  • Build with confidence, knowing your idea is grounded in data
  • Move forward with validated concepts and realistic expectations
  • Set realistic expectations around cost, timelines, and feasibility
  • Plan effectively with accurate projections

Frequently Asked Questions About Product Discovery

What is Product Discovery, exactly?+

Product Discovery is the process of turning an early idea into a clear, validated concept. It involves defining what your product needs to be, identifying its market fit, evaluating technical feasibility, and creating a development plan.

I have an idea for a product, now what?+

That’s exactly where Product Discovery comes in. We help you take your idea (even if it’sjust a few notes or sketches) and turn it into a structured concept with real potential. You’ll get clarity on the opportunity, technical possibilities, and what it will take to move forward.

How do I know if my product idea is worth developing?+

During discovery, we evaluate market demand, competitor landscape, technical feasibility, and user needs. This helps validate the idea and define whether it’s worth pursuing, and how to make it viable.

How do I come up with a product idea?+

Some founders start with a problem they’ve experienced. Others spot a gap in the market. Either way, we use tools like Realizr™ to help shape and develop your raw ideas into real product opportunities.

How do I make or manufacture my product idea?+

Manufacturing comes later but Discovery helps get you there. We define what your product will be, assess its buildability, and create a development roadmap. Once ready, we can also assist with prototyping and manufacturer selection.

How long does Product Discovery take?+

Most projects take 4–6weeks, depending on the complexity of your idea and how much groundwork has already been done.

What does Product Discovery cost?+

Budgets typically range from $10,000 to $25,000. The investment covers research, technical evaluation, early concept visuals, and a step-by-step development plan.

What if I’m not ready to commit to full development?+

We offer paid strategy consultations to help you understand the development process, rough costs, and what makes sense for your idea. The fee is credited if you move forward with a project.

Do you help with patents?+

Yes, we conduct prior art searches, provide patent-ready visuals, and refer you to trusted IP attorneys for filing.

What happens after Discovery?+

From there, we can assist with concept design, CAD modeling, feasibility studies, and proof-of-concept prototyping. You can also use your Discovery package to apply for funding or pitch investors.

Sources and standards

Discovery questions, answered honestly

Why not skip discovery and go straight to CAD?

Because the expensive mistakes are decided before CAD: the wrong user, the wrong price point, a feature the factory cannot mold, a claim someone already patented. Discovery is the cheapest place to be wrong. Skipping it usually costs more later than the phase itself would have.

What do I physically get out of a discovery engagement?

A written product definition, a use-case and user profile, a technical feasibility read with the known risks named, a first prior-art picture, a target cost and price band, and a staged build plan with budgets. It is the document you hand an investor, a factory or the next engineer.

How long does discovery take?

Two to five weeks for most consumer and light industrial products. Regulated categories and connected products run longer because the standards review and the electronics feasibility both have to land before the plan is credible.

What if discovery says my idea will not work?

Then it has done its job for a fraction of what tooling would have cost. In practice the finding is rarely a flat no — it is more often a different form factor, a different first market, or a smaller version of the product that can be launched for a tenth of the money.

Does the discovery fee carry over into development?

The work does. Everything produced in discovery — definition, risk list, cost model, build plan — feeds directly into the engineering phase, so nothing is repeated or re-billed. If you continue with us, discovery is the first stage of the project rather than a separate purchase.

Three reasons founders keep working with us

  • 1

One team from sketch to shipped parts. Industrial design, mechanical and electrical engineering, prototyping and manufacturing sit under one roof, so nothing is lost in a handoff.

  • 2

You own the work. Native CAD, drawings and source files are yours at the end of every phase — no lock-in, no re-buying your own design later.

  • 3

Fixed scope, fixed price. Every phase is quoted up front with a deliverable list and a date. No hourly meters, no surprise invoices.
