Prototype design plans what a prototype must prove before you spend money building it: fit, function, user testing or investor demonstration. Prototype design is the work of deciding what a prototype must prove and engineering it so it can be built. It defines the prototype type (looks-like, works-like or pre-production), the parts and materials, the build method and the test plan. A prototype design package usually takes 2 to 5 weeks and costs $3,500 to $25,000 before the build itself.

What a prototype design package includes
- A stated question. One sentence naming what this build has to prove: that it fits the hand, that the latch survives 5,000 cycles, that the board fits the enclosure.
- Design for the process. Parts drawn for SLA, SLS, CNC, urethane casting or sheet metal, with the wall thicknesses, clearances and fasteners that process actually allows.
- A bill of materials. Off-the-shelf hardware, motors, batteries, seals and fasteners specified with real part numbers, not placeholders.
- Build and finish notes. Assembly order, adhesives, paint or texture, and what gets hand-finished versus left raw.
- The physical unit. Built, assembled, checked against the drawing and photographed.
- A test result. What it did when you used it, and the changes that go into the next round.

Choosing fidelity without overspending
The most common mistake is buying a beautiful prototype when the open question is mechanical, or a rough functional rig when the meeting is with a retail buyer.
Pick fidelity by audience: an investor or licensee needs it to look like the product; an engineer needs it to work; a factory needs it to be made the way production will make it. Splitting a build into a looks-like unit and a separate works-like rig is often cheaper than forcing one part to do both.
If the mechanism is the risk, prove the mechanism first with printed parts and off-the-shelf hardware, then spend on finish.

Do I need CAD before you can build a prototype?+
No. A sketch, a photo of a taped-together mock-up or a competitor product is enough to start. We model it, and you keep the files.
How long does a prototype take?+
Simple single-part builds run about one to two weeks from clean CAD. Multi-part assemblies with electronics usually take three to six weeks including one revision.
Show it freely once your IP position is settled. Prototypes are not certified products, so they should not be sold to consumers without the testing and compliance work that production units go through. Talk to us about low-volume manufacturing when you need sellable units.

- 01What is the difference between prototype design and prototyping?
Prototype design is the engineering that decides what gets built — geometry, materials, tolerances and how parts go together. Prototyping is the fabrication that turns those files into a physical object. Design is usually the larger cost.
- 02How much does prototype design cost?
$2,500–$8,000 for a simple molded part, $8,000–$25,000 for a multi-part consumer product, and $25,000–$70,000 once electronics and firmware are involved.
- 03Do I need a prototype before filing a patent?
No. A patent needs a described, enabled invention, not a physical unit. A prototype still helps, because building one usually reveals claims worth adding.
- 04What do I need to bring to start?
A description of what the product must do, any sketches or reference products, target price and target quantity. If you have none of that yet, start with concept design.
- 05How many iterations should I expect?
Two to four. The first build almost always changes fit and ergonomics; the second usually settles function; later rounds tune cost and manufacturability.
- 06Can the prototype design be used for production?
That is the point of designing it production-intent. We draw the parts for the process you will eventually manufacture with, so the step to low-volume manufacturing is a tooling exercise, not a redesign.
The design goes into design for manufacturing, then tooling and production, or into a licensing package if you are pitching rather than building.

What is prototype design?
Prototype design is the engineering work that turns a concept into a buildable physical unit: choosing what the prototype must prove, designing parts for the process that will make them, specifying materials and tolerances, and producing the files a shop or printer can quote from.
What does a prototype design package include?
A prototype design package normally includes 3D CAD, 2D drawings with critical dimensions and tolerances, a bill of materials with sourcing notes, assembly instructions, and — for electronics — schematics, PCB layout files and a firmware build. Without drawings and a BOM, a shop cannot quote accurately.
How much does prototype design cost?
Design work for a simple mechanical prototype typically runs $2,000 to $8,000; a complex electromechanical prototype runs $15,000 to $60,000 including electronics and firmware. Those figures are design and build engineering, separate from the fabrication cost of the parts themselves.
How long does prototype design take?
Two to four weeks of design for a straightforward mechanical part, plus one to two weeks of fabrication. Electromechanical products usually take six to twelve weeks to first working unit because board fabrication and component lead times dominate the schedule.
Should the prototype look like the final product?
Only if appearance is the question you are testing. Looks-like models sell and validate desirability; works-like rigs prove function and can look like nothing at all. Combining both into one build early is the most common way to overspend.
