Phone cases look like the easiest product in consumer electronics accessories and price like the hardest. Margins are thin, model cycles are short, and a mold that arrives two months late is a mold for a phone nobody is buying any more. Choosing between phone case manufacturers is mostly about matching the process to your volume and your launch window.

What to ask a supplier before you commit
- Whose CAD is the phone model? Scanned handset data varies. Ask which device revision the cavity was cut from and insist on a printed fit check before steel is cut.
- Drop-test evidence. If you plan to advertise a drop rating, ask for MIL-STD-810G test reports on your geometry, not a generic certificate.
- Tool ownership. Confirm in writing that you own the mold and can move it. Unstated tool ownership is the most common way accessory brands get locked to one factory.
- Colour and finish control. Yellowing is the top complaint on clear TPU; ask for anti-yellowing additive specification and UV-exposure data.
- Lead time to first shipment. Tooling plus sampling plus production is usually eight to fourteen weeks; a launch tied to a phone release date has to start earlier than that.
Getting to a sellable case
The design work that pays for itself is the boring part: button feel, port clearances, camera-bump lip height, wall thickness for grip and the exact interference that keeps the case on without making it painful to remove. How to vet a case manufacturer
- Ask who owns the tool. Get it in writing that the steel is yours and can be shipped if you change suppliers.
- Check model-cycle turnaround. A supplier who cannot cut a new cavity within four weeks of a phone launch will cost you the season.
- Require drop-test data. MIL-STD-810G 1.2 m onto concrete, six faces plus corners, is the accepted floor for a protective claim.
- Confirm material certs. RoHS, REACH and a Prop 65 statement for US retail; yellowing resistance for clear TPU.
- Price the whole landed unit. Insert card, retail hanger, poly bag and freight often add more than the molded part itself.

Qualification tests worth paying for
- Drop testing to MIL-STD-810G 516.6 — 26 drops from 1.2 m onto each face, edge and corner, if you intend to make any protection claim in marketing.
- Wireless charging pass-through — verify at the actual case thickness with a Qi2 charger; magnets need alignment testing, not just presence.

"Military grade" on a phone case listing usually refers to MIL-STD-810G Method 516.6, which specifies 26 drops from 48 inches onto plywood over concrete, across faces, edges and corners.
It is a real protocol, but it is self-declared unless a third-party lab runs it, and the standard was written for equipment durability, not for whether a screen survives.
If drop protection is your differentiator, pay a lab such as an ISO 17025 accredited facility for a witnessed run on production-tooled parts with a real handset or a mass-and-stiffness-matched dummy inside. Budget $2,500 to $8,000 per configuration and expect to iterate at least once.

Packaging, retail readiness and the hidden cost of a hook
Case unit economics are decided at retail, and retail packaging is where first-time brands lose their margin. A blister or clamshell with a printed insert runs $0.35 to $0.90 per unit at modest volumes, before the artwork, before the UPC, and before the corrugated shipper.
Add a peg hook, and you have to prove the hang tab survives a pull test. Add a retailer-specific planogram, and you may need three SKUs of the same case in different pack formats.
