1 | Product Discovery

The Product Discovery stage is where we begin our journey together. We work with you to understand your idea, its market potential, and its unique value proposition.

This phase involves conducting thorough market research and a prior art search to identify existing patents and similar inventions, helping us define a clear path forward. Our goal is to refine your concept and outline a development strategy that maximizes its chances for success.

2 | Concept Design

In the Concept Design stage, we translate your idea into a visual representation. Our design team develops sketches, 3D models, and renders that capture the product’s aesthetics and core functionalities.

Through collaborative feedback sessions, we ensure the concept aligns with your vision and is feasible for further development, setting a solid foundation for engineering and prototyping.

3 | Provisional Patent Application

To protect your intellectual property early in the process, we facilitate the filing of a provisional patent application.

Our legal partners assist in preparing and submitting the application, providing your product with a “patent pending” status that safeguards your idea while allowing for continued development and testing.

4 | Potential Consumer Survey

We validate your concept by gathering real-world feedback from potential customers. This stage involves conducting surveys to understand the needs, preferences, and pain points of your target audience.

The insights gained from this research help refine the product’s design and positioning before moving forward.

5 | Technical Design & Engineering

During the Technical Design and Engineering stage, our engineering team develops detailed designs and technical specifications for every component of your product.

We create CAD models, perform simulations, and conduct technical evaluations to ensure that all parts meet functional and safety requirements.

6 | Prototyping

Prototyping brings your concept to life with a tangible, functional model. In this stage, we build prototypes to test and refine the design, ensuring it meets all requirements.

Multiple iterations are conducted to perfect the product, identify potential issues, and resolve them before transitioning to the manufacturing phase.

7 | Intellectual Property Protection

Building on the provisional patent, we assist in securing formal intellectual property protection.

Our legal partners help prepare and file comprehensive patent applications, trademarks, or other IP protections to safeguard your product as it moves closer to market entry.

8 | Design for Manufacturing

The Design for Manufacturing stage involves optimizing the product for large-scale production. This includes selecting materials, refining the design for cost efficiency, and planning the entire production process. We address the supply chain, quality control, and all other nuances related to manufacturing the first batch, ensuring the product is ready for mass production.

Branching Paths: Licensing or Venturing

10a | Licensing Path

  • Licensee Scouting, LA NPDT'S New Product Development Process

    a1 | Licensee Scouting

Typically, this stage involves identifying and approaching potential licensees who might be interested in your product. The goal is to find companies that align with your vision and have the capability to bring your product to market efficiently.

  • Terms Negotiation, LA NPDT'S New Product Development Process

    a2 | Terms Negotiation

In this stage, terms for a licensing agreement are negotiated, ensuring that both parties benefit. This could involve discussions on royalties, distribution rights, and other key terms that define the relationship between the inventor and the licensee.

10b | Venturing Path

  • Funding Search, LA NPDT'S New Product Development Process, Product Development Process

    b1 | Funding Search

We help identify and approach potential investors or funding sources, including venture capital, angel investors, or crowdfunding platforms, to support the product’s launch and growth.

  • Manufacturing, LA NPDT'S New Product Development Process

    b2 | Manufacturing

We provide specialized short-run manufacturing services for first batches, allowing our customers to test their products in the market with minimal investment and production time.

For scaling up, we partner with mass manufacturing companies to help transition from initial runs to large-scale manufacturing, ensuring a smooth ramp-up of production capacity.

Product Launch

The culmination of all development efforts, the Product Launch, marks your product’s debut in the market.

This stage involves executing your go-to-market strategy, managing distribution channels, and beginning sales.

It’s the moment your product reaches customers and begins its journey toward success.

Order a Product Development Plan for your Idea

Ready to bring your idea to life? Order a custom Product Development Plan (PDP) tailored specifically to your concept!

Our PDP provides a clear roadmap from your current stage to the market, detailing every step from design and engineering to prototyping and manufacturing. You’ll receive an estimate of costs, duration, potential challenges, and key considerations for developing your product.

Developing a PDP typically takes 3 to 7 days. After purchase, you’ll receive an intake form to describe your idea, provide relevant materials, and ensure all information is protected under a non-disclosure agreement. This plan gives you clarity on how much it will cost, how long it will take, and what each step involves.

New product development process stages and what happens in each
StageNameWhat happens
1Idea captureWrite the idea down as a problem statement, sketch it, and record the date and witnesses.
2Market & need validationConfirm somebody has the problem, how often, and what they pay for it today.
3Prior art & IP checkSearch patents and products already on the market before you spend design money.
4Requirements definitionTurn the need into measurable requirements: size, power, cost target, environment, standards.
5Concept designGenerate and screen several directions, then justify the one you carry forward.
6Engineering & CADProduction-intent CAD, materials, tolerances, and a design-for-manufacturing review.
7PrototypingBuild the cheapest artifact that answers the biggest open question, then iterate.
8Testing & validationRun the protocol: safety, durability, regulatory pre-checks, user testing.
9Manufacturing preparationTooling package, supplier selection, quality plan, first article inspection.
10Launch — license or ventureEither license the design to a manufacturer or produce and sell it yourself.

Working through this for the first time? The product development process guide walks each stage in detail, and our product development services cover stages four through ten.

Process map: common questions

What are the stages of the new product development process?

Ten stages: idea capture, market and need validation, prior art and IP check, requirements definition, concept design, engineering and CAD, prototyping, testing and validation, manufacturing preparation, and launch — which branches into licensing the design or producing it yourself.

Is there a printable new product development process flowchart?

Yes. The flowchart on this page maps all ten stages plus the licensing and venturing branch, and the stage table below it is the same chart in text form so you can copy it into your own plan.

How long does the full new product development process take?

Six to fourteen months is typical for consumer hardware from idea to production tooling. Simple products can compress to three or four months; regulated devices commonly run eighteen months or more.

Can stages of the process run in parallel?

Yes, and they should. Prior art searching runs alongside concept design, long-lead tooling quotes start during engineering, and certification testing is booked before the verification build exists. Serializing every stage is the single most common cause of a twelve-month program becoming a two-year one.

Where does licensing fit in the flowchart?

At stage ten. Licensing hands a proven, manufacturable design to a company that already sells into your market in exchange for royalties; venturing means you fund tooling and inventory and keep the margin. Both need the same first nine stages completed.
