Pet Innovations and Product Development Services

At LA NPDT , we specialize in pet product development that helps entrepreneurs bring their innovative pet products to market.

Short answer

Pet product development has two users: the animal that chews, drags and soaks the product, and the owner who buys it. LANPDT designs to chew and pull loads, specifies non-toxic and washable materials, builds prototypes tested on real animals, and delivers a manufacturable package for feeders, toys, apparel and automated pet hardware.

Whether you’re developing interactive toys or functional pet wearables, our team collaborates closely with clients to deliver products that meet the needs of both pet owners and their furry companions.

Our extensive experience in pet product design, prototyping, and manufacturing ensures that the pet innovations we develop are not only engaging but also practical, durable, and safe.

This section highlights case studies that demonstrate how we turn pet innovations into market-ready solutions, helping businesses thrive in the competitive pet product industry.

Sources and standards

What actually governs a pet product

Pet products are not federally certified the way toys are, which surprises founders. The real constraints are liability, retailer requirements and the animal itself.

What actually governs a pet product
Standard or ruleWhat it requiresWhat it changes in the design
No mandatory federal safety standardCPSC toy rules do not apply to pet products; FDA regulates pet food, not pet hardware.Retailers, not regulators, set the bar — so design to CPSIA-level material limits voluntarily.
Material toxicityChewed and mouthed parts should meet food-contact grade limits.Push to food-grade TPE, natural rubber, silicone or PP; avoid soft PVC and phthalates.
Chew and tensile loadingBite force ranges from roughly 150 psi (small dogs) to over 700 psi (large breeds).Sets wall thickness, durometer and whether a part can be hollow at all.
WashabilityDishwasher and machine-wash cycles at 140-160 °F.Rules out PLA and low-temp adhesives; favors PP, silicone and welded seams.
Electrical pet hardwareFeeders, cameras and fountains need FCC Part 15 and a UL-recognized power supply.Adds a certification round and a sealed, chew-resistant cord path.

Pet product development stages and costs

Animal testing rounds are the differentiator here. A pet product that has never met a dog is not validated.

Pet product development stages and costs
StageWhat it involvesWhat it provesTypical cost
Concept + sizing studyBreed-range sizing, ergonomics for the owner's handThat one SKU can cover the size range, or that you need two$2,500 – $7,000
Animal-test prototypePrinted or cast parts in production-like durometerChew survival, engagement, refusal behavior$1,500 – $6,000
Mechanism / electronics buildDispensers, timers, fountains, camerasDuty cycle, jam behavior, cleanability$6,000 – $25,000
Production packageCAD, DFM, materials with wash and chew dataFactory-quotable design$6,000 – $18,000
Soft goods toolingSewn vests, harnesses, apparel patterns and gradingFit across the breed size range$3,000 – $12,000

Ranges are what comparable projects have actually cost here, not list prices. Every project is quoted stage by stage, so you approve the next step with real numbers in front of you. See the prototype cost calculator for a first estimate on your own part.

Pet products we engineered

A cooling vest engineered around canine anatomy, evaporative performance and machine washing, sized across breeds and patterned for production. On the hardware side, Perky Paws took an automated interactive pet toy from concept through mechanism, electronics and enclosure.

Pet product development questions

Are there safety regulations for pet products in the US?

There is no mandatory federal safety standard for pet hardware — CPSC toy rules cover children's products, and the FDA regulates pet food rather than gear. Major retailers and your own liability exposure set the real bar, so we design to food-contact material limits and run chew and pull testing anyway.

How do you test a chew toy before tooling?

We cast or print parts in the production durometer, then run them with real dogs across the target size range, plus a pull and tear rig for repeatable numbers. Failures at this stage are cheap; failures after a $30,000 mold are not.

What does a pet product cost to develop?

A molded non-electronic product usually runs $10,000 to $30,000 through engineering and prototypes, with tooling from $12,000 to $45,000. Automated feeders, fountains and connected devices run $40,000 to $120,000 because of electronics, firmware and certification.

Can you handle both hard goods and soft goods?

Yes. We engineer molded and electronic pet hardware in-house and develop sewn products — vests, harnesses, beds — through patterning, grading and sample rounds with sewing partners.

Three reasons founders keep working with us

  • 1

One team from sketch to shipped parts. Industrial design, mechanical and electrical engineering, prototyping and manufacturing sit under one roof, so nothing is lost in a handoff.

  • 2

You own the work. Native CAD, drawings and source files are yours at the end of every phase — no lock-in, no re-buying your own design later.

  • 3

Fixed scope, fixed price. Every phase is quoted up front with a deliverable list and a date. No hourly meters, no surprise invoices.
