Ralph Hill

Ralph Hill is a Prototyping Engineer at LA New Product Development Team, specializing in turning product concepts and engineering designs into functional physical systems. He has worked with LA NPDT since 2019 and brings hands-on experience across mechanical systems, electronics, rapid manufacturing, 3D modeling, technical visualization, and prototype development.
Ralph's work centers on the practical engineering challenges that emerge when a concept moves from a CAD model into the physical world. He designs, builds, tests, troubleshoots, and refines prototypes that may combine mechanical motion, electrical power, electronics, thermal behavior, structural components, and control systems. His approach emphasizes iterative development: building systems early, identifying real-world limitations, and improving the design through physical testing and observation.
In addition to hands-on prototyping, Ralph has a background in 3D modeling, animation, visual effects, and technical visualization. He completed training in Animation, Interactive Technology, Video Graphics and Special Effects at the Digital Media Institute at Intertech. This combination of physical prototyping and digital visualization allows him not only to build functional systems but also to communicate complex mechanisms and product concepts visually to engineers, clients, manufacturers, and other project stakeholders.

How this role fits the work

LA NPDT runs as one team rather than a chain of vendors. Research, industrial design, mechanical and electronic engineering, prototyping and the manufacturing hand-off all happen inside the same group, so a decision made during concept design is carried by the people who will later have to build the part — and challenged early if it will not survive tooling.

In practice that means every project has a named lead who stays with it from the first call to the final file release. You are not reintroduced to a new team at each stage, and the person who understands why a wall thickness or a component choice was made is still reachable when a factory asks about it six months later.

The team works from Ruston, Louisiana, entirely within the United States. Engineering hours land in the same time zone as most of our clients, prototypes ship domestically, and questions about intellectual property are answered under US law rather than through an offshore intermediary.
