Best Invention Help Companies for Inventors (and Which to Avoid)
An honest guide to invention help companies: who genuinely helps inventors build and license products, how to spot invention-promotion scams, and what each route costs.

Short answer: most inventors do not need an invention help company. They need one of four specific things: a patent attorney, a product development firm that can build the thing, a licensing agent, or a prototype shop.
The safest legitimate routes are a registered patent attorney for IP, a US product development firm such as LA NPDT or Design 1st for design and manufacturing, an established licensing organization such as inventRight for a license-first strategy, and free public help through the USPTO Pro Bono program, Inventors Assistance Center and your regional Small Business Development Center.
Be extremely cautious with any company that markets to inventors, promises to submit your idea to corporations, and asks for several thousand dollars up front.
Companies that help with inventions fall into four groups: patent attorneys and agents who protect the idea, product development firms that design and build it, licensing coaches who help you rent it to a manufacturer, and invention-promotion companies that mostly sell paperwork. If you have a CAD file and just want to hold the part, a print bureau or job shop is the cheapest correct answer. You do not need a development firm for that.

Are invention help companies legitimate?
Some are, many are not. The reliable test is what you receive for your money. Engineering deliverables, prototypes and patent filings are real. A market research packet and a promise to circulate your idea to manufacturers is the classic invention-promotion pattern the FTC has acted against repeatedly.
Should I patent before building a prototype?
Usually a provisional filing first, then build. Building often changes the mechanism, and a full application written after a working prototype describes what actually works. Any reputable firm signs an NDA before you disclose.
Is it better to license an invention or manufacture it?
Licensing needs less capital and returns roughly 3 to 5 percent of wholesale, and it works best for simple products in established categories. Manufacturing needs far more capital but keeps the margin and the brand. Most inventors underestimate how strong a prototype has to be before a licensee takes a call.
