Bobby Brown — inventor of PerfectContact
Category
Sporting goods training aid
Starting point
A patented idea for a spring-loaded putting aid that returns the ball
What we delivered
Product design, spring mechanism engineering, prototype development and testing
Key constraints
Consistent ball capture and return, realistic putting feel, portable and durable build, affordable manufacturing
Outcome
A working training aid that lets golfers putt repeatedly without retrieving the ball

The client

Bobby Brown, a passionate golfer, patented an idea he called PerfectContact: a putting trainer that lets a golfer strike the same ball over and over without walking after it. He came to LA NPDT for product design and prototype development.
Seeking expert assistance to turn his concept into a reality, Bobby approached LA NPDT for product design and prototype development.

The challenge

The device had to hold a ball on a spring return firmly enough to survive a real putting stroke, release it cleanly every time, and still fit putter heads of very different widths. It also had to anchor on both outdoor turf and indoor hard floors.
Our task was to bring this vision to life by creating an appealing, functional design and building a prototype ready for demonstration and manufacturing.

Our solution

We began by designing the product, focusing on aesthetics and functionality. The PerfectContact device was crafted from durable aluminum and plastic.
Its adjustable design accommodates various putter widths and allows users to modify the spring’s tightness, tailoring the device to their specific needs.
This adjustability ensures optimal training conditions for different putting strengths and techniques.
Our engineering team meticulously developed the internal mechanism, ensuring smooth operation and durability.
The enclosure, CNC machined from aluminum, featured openings for versatile securing options. Users could insert tees to anchor the device on a golf putting green outdoors or attach suction cups for indoor putting practice on hard floors.
Additionally, we incorporated branding areas, providing marketing opportunities and enabling white-label manufacturing.

With the design complete, we produced detailed renderings and drawings, culminating in a fully functional prototype.
Bobby was able to showcase PerfectContact, his innovative golf putting aid, to golf professionals, receiving validation for the design.

The result

Adjustable width setting for different putter heads

Prototype

Functional PerfectContact prototype ready for demonstration
