Short answer

Outsourced product development explained: engagement models, cost versus hiring, how IP and NDAs work, and the checks that keep a team honest. Outsourced product development means hiring an external team to design and engineer your product instead of building that capability in-house.

Outsourced product development means hiring an external team to design and engineer your product instead of building that capability in-house. It works because a hardware program needs six or seven specialties, but each one only for a few months - so paying for them permanently costs more than the program itself.

01

Outsourcing versus hiring: the real comparison

In-house teamOutsourced team
Time to start3-6 months to recruit1-3 weeks
Year-one cost$600k+ fully loaded for 4-5 engineersProgram cost only, typically $75k - $400k
Skill coverageWhatever you hired forEvery specialty, on the weeks it is needed
Ramp-downLayoffs or idle capacityEnds with the program
Institutional knowledgeStays with youStays with you only if the contract says so
Best forContinuous product linesFirst products, spikes, missing specialties

The honest version: outsourcing wins decisively for the first one or two products, and loses once you are shipping several products a year and design knowledge itself becomes a competitive asset. Many companies run both - an internal core team, with external capacity for peaks and for skills they will never need full time.

Engagement models

ModelHow it worksFits when
Fixed-scope phaseOne phase, defined deliverables, fixed priceScope is clear and you want budget certainty
Time and materialsMonthly rate against an agreed planScope will evolve as you learn
Dedicated teamA named team reserved for you month to monthA long program with continuous work
Staff augmentationOne specialty plugged into your teamYou have a team and are missing one skill

03

Protecting IP and keeping control

  • Sign a mutual NDA before disclosure, and confirm that work-for-hire assignment covers every contributor, including subcontractors.
  • Require native source files - CAD, schematics, PCB layout, firmware repositories - as contractual deliverables, not just PDFs and STEP exports.
  • Own the supplier relationships. If the developer holds the tooling and the factory contact, switching later is expensive.
  • Agree who files patents and when. Prior art searching should happen before design money is spent, not after.
  • Set phase gates with written acceptance criteria so payment tracks proven progress rather than elapsed time.
  • Ask for weekly written status plus a working artifact every four to six weeks. Programs fail quietly between demos.

04

Choosing a partner

  • Ask for products that reached production, not renders. Manufacturing is where designs are tested.
  • Confirm the disciplines are in-house. A team that subcontracts electronics adds a handoff you will pay for twice.
  • Check they have shipped in your category and at your volume - 5,000 units a year is a different design than 500,000.
  • Meet the engineers who will do the work, not only the person selling it.
  • Get a phase-level estimate with assumptions written down. A single number with no assumptions is a number that will change.

Outsourced product development: common questions

What is outsourced product development?+

Outsourced product development is hiring an external team to design and engineer your product instead of building that capability in-house. A hardware program needs six or seven specialties for a few months each, so renting them for the weeks they are needed usually costs far less than hiring them permanently.

Is outsourcing product development cheaper than hiring?+

For the first one or two products, yes. Four to five in-house engineers cost over $600,000 a year fully loaded and take three to six months to recruit, while a full outsourced program typically runs $75,000 to $400,000 and starts in weeks. Once you ship several products a year, an internal team becomes the better economics.

Who owns the intellectual property?+

You should, in writing, before disclosure. Require work-for-hire assignment covering every contributor including subcontractors, and make native source files — CAD, schematics, PCB layout, firmware repositories — contractual deliverables rather than PDF exports.

What are the risks of outsourcing product development?+

The three real risks are losing supplier control, receiving deliverables you cannot edit, and slow feedback loops. All three are contractual: own the factory relationships, require native files, and set phase gates with written acceptance criteria and a working artifact every four to six weeks.

What engagement models are available?+

Fixed-scope phases when the scope is clear and you want budget certainty, time and materials when scope will evolve, a dedicated team for long continuous programs, and staff augmentation when you have a team and are missing one specialty.

What founders say after working with us

“Konstantin has been so amazing and his entire team is A+. I researched and interviewed many product development companies across the country and ultimately decided on LA NPDT... and I'm so glad I did. The attention to detail and overall effort has been exactly what I needed and then some. If you are looking for a company to help you bring your product to life, look no further!”
William EvansWilliam EvansCEO, Burple
“This company is awesome. I run a medical device company and we required a number of accessories to be designed and built for our medical device. They delivered a polished design and printed the accessories on time using high-quality materials. I continue to work with them for all of our material needs.”
Matteo ZiffMatteo ZiffFounder, Virtual Vision
“I highly recommend the LA New Product Development Team for any of your new product development needs. From the development of my concept to the actual prototype, the process was seamless. I especially loved the quick responsiveness, and I received regular updates during every stage, so I was never left wondering how things were going. The steps were clearly outlined, along with estimated costs.”

Three reasons founders keep working with us

  • 1

One team from sketch to shipped parts. Industrial design, mechanical and electrical engineering, prototyping and manufacturing sit under one roof, so nothing is lost in a handoff.

  • 2

You own the work. Native CAD, drawings and source files are yours at the end of every phase — no lock-in, no re-buying your own design later.

  • 3

Fixed scope, fixed price. Every phase is quoted up front with a deliverable list and a date. No hourly meters, no surprise invoices.
