Cosmetic packaging design is two jobs at once: a structural design that protects the product in transit and presents it on shelf, and a graphic system that keeps the item recognisable inside an existing brand family.
For Fashionit's PowerPad Beauty we built both — a large translucent window so the device is visible through the pack, a vacuum-formed tray holding it snug during shipping, and brand elements carried over from the client's earlier packaging so the new product read as part of the same family.

Annabel WolmanCEO, FashionIt / U SpeakerGoogle reviewThe client
Fashionit builds fashion-led tech accessories, and the PowerPad Beauty sits between two aisles: it is a powered beauty device, so it has to look like cosmetics on the shelf and like electronics in the hand. We had already designed packaging for their GloLens selfie clip, so the brand system was established before this project started.
The challenge
The brief was to show the product while keeping the brand's existing design language intact — delicate, clean, minimal — and to secure a fragile powered device inside a pack that would still read as premium under retail lighting.
Cosmetic packaging design carries a harder aesthetic bar than most categories. Shoppers in a beauty aisle read finish, weight and print quality as evidence of what is inside, so an obvious cost saving on the carton reduces the perceived value of the product itself. At the same time this pack had to be a new family member, not a new brand: recognisably Fashionit at a glance, clearly a different product on inspection.

Our solution
We carried the brand's established elements — typography, colour restraint, layout rhythm — into a structure built for this specific product. A large translucent screen gives full visibility of the PowerPad Beauty''s face and features, so the device sells itself rather than relying on a rendering of it.
Behind the window, a vacuum-formed insert was shaped to the device so it cannot shift during transport or retailer handling. Structure and graphics were developed against a dieline a converter could actually run, which is where packaging projects usually fail: a beautiful flat layout that cannot be printed, cut and folded economically is not a design, it is a proposal.

The result
Fashionit got a pack that distinguishes the PowerPad Beauty from the rest of their range while leaving the brand identity undisturbed — visibly part of the same family, immediately identifiable as its own product. The device ships protected, presents well on shelf, and the structure is repeatable for future additions to the line.
Beauty packaging has to survive the shelf and the shipper
Cosmetic packaging carries two loads at once: it has to look premium under retail lighting and protect a fragile product through distribution. Foil, emboss, soft-touch and window decisions all have cost and manufacturability consequences, so we make them against a real dieline and a real converter quote rather than after the artwork is approved.
Our process runs shelf and competitor review, structural concepts modelled in 3D and prototyped physically, then graphics, dielines and print-ready files — see product packaging services for the full scope. Design and prototyping happen in Ruston, Louisiana.

How cosmetic packaging gets designed and produced
1. Start from the retail context
Peg hook, shelf, counter display or e-commerce box are four different structures. The channel decides the footprint, the hang tab, the print area and how much of the product has to be visible before anyone can touch it.
2. Protect the product physically
A vacuum-formed or molded tray sized to the device stops movement in the pack. Movement is what causes scuffed finishes and returns — the failure a beauty buyer notices first.
3. Show the product without opening the pack
A translucent screen or window lets the buyer read the finish and the form factor. It costs a little more than a printed panel and it is usually the difference between a pick-up and a walk-past.
4. Carry the brand system, don't restart it
A new SKU should look like a sibling, not a stranger. We take the type, colour, layout logic and material cues from the existing family so the range still reads as one line on a shelf.
5. Release production files, not concepts
Dielines at correct bleed, print-ready artwork with spot and finish call-outs, material and board specs, and a packout drawing. That is what a converter quotes and prints from.
| Format | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Folding carton | Skincare, cartoned devices | Cheapest per unit; needs an insert for heavy items |
| Blister or clamshell | Peg-hung accessories and tools | Tooling per shape; opening experience can feel cheap |
| Window carton with tray | Devices where the finish sells the product | Two tools; tray must be sized to the exact part |
| Rigid box | Premium and gift sets | Highest cost and volume; slow lead times |
Questions about this project
Straight answers from the engineers who ran the build. Have a different question? Ask us directly.
Talk to an engineerWhat makes cosmetic packaging design different from other retail packaging?
The aesthetic bar is higher and it is read as evidence. Beauty shoppers infer product quality from carton finish, print quality and weight, so an obvious cost saving on the pack lowers the perceived value of what is inside it.
Can a new product get its own look without breaking the brand?
Yes — that was the brief here. Keep the typography, colour restraint and layout rhythm the brand already owns, and let the structure and product window do the differentiating. The result reads as the same family at a glance and as a distinct product on inspection.
How do you protect a powered device inside a premium pack?
A vacuum-formed insert shaped to the device, so it cannot shift during transport or retailer handling, sitting behind a window that shows the face of the product. Protection and visibility are solved in one structure rather than traded against each other.
When are foil, emboss and soft-touch worth the cost?
When the shelf around you uses them and the price point supports it. Each one adds tooling or a press pass, so we price them against a real dieline and converter quote during design, not after the artwork has been approved.
What files does a converter need from you?
A print-ready dieline with bleeds and folds, the graphics laid out on it, colour build or Pantone callouts, and the specification for any window, insert or special finish. Anything less and the converter improvises, which is where brand drift starts.
