Xometry and Protolabs make parts from a design that already exists. A product development partner creates that design, proves it works, and then has the parts made. They are not competitors — they sit at different points on the same timeline. Buying the wrong one is the most common and most expensive mistake we see from first-time hardware teams.

When a marketplace or quote service is the right call
If you have production-intent CAD, know your material and tolerances, and simply need parts, these services are excellent and hard to beat on price or speed. Use them when the engineering question is already answered.
- You have a released drawing package with tolerances and a specified material.
- You need a handful of parts fast to check fit against something that already exists.
- You are re-ordering a part you have already validated.
- Your in-house engineering team designed it and just needs capacity.
When a quote service will quietly cost you more
An instant quote engine prices geometry. It does not ask why the wall is 4 mm thick, whether that snap fit will survive 500 cycles, or whether a $12,000 mold is being cut for a design that has never been in a user's hand. We regularly meet founders who spent $20,000 across a dozen part orders, iterating blind, before starting the engineering they needed on day one.
Do product development companies just resell marketplace parts?
Some do, and it is a fair question to ask directly. We build most prototypes in our own shop in Ruston, Louisiana — FDM, SLA and CNC — and we do use outside suppliers for processes we do not run, such as SLS, sheet metal and injection molds. The difference is not who owns the machine.

Which one should you choose?
- You have finished, validated CAD and need parts — use a marketplace or digital manufacturer.
- You have CAD but it has never been built or tested — get a design for manufacturing review first, then order parts.
- You have a concept, a sketch or a problem and no CAD — you need a development partner; a quote service has nothing to price.
- You have a working product that costs too much to make — that is a DFM and cost-reduction engagement, not a re-quote.

Frequently asked questions
Is Xometry cheaper than a product development partner?
Per part, usually yes, because you are only paying for machine time. Across a program the comparison changes: a partner catches design problems before you pay for tooling, so the total spend to a working, manufacturable product is often lower even though the individual invoices are larger.
Can I use Xometry or Protolabs and a development partner at the same time?
Yes, and that is the normal setup. The partner owns the design, the drawing package and the supplier decisions, while marketplaces and quick-turn shops make the parts. You get engineering ownership without paying a markup on every printed part.
When is a marketplace clearly the right choice?
When your CAD is production intent, tolerances and materials are already specified, and you simply need parts made. If nobody has to decide how the product should work, you do not need a development partner for that order.
