Short answer: a product development consultant is an individual expert you hire for judgment - feasibility, strategy, supplier selection, unblocking a stalled project - typically at 100 to 250 dollars an hour.

A product development firm is a team you hire for execution: design, CAD, prototypes, testing and a manufacturing package. A freelancer is a single pair of hands for one discipline, usually CAD or electronics, at 40 to 120 dollars an hour.

Hire a consultant when you need a decision, a freelancer when you know exactly what task to hand over, and a firm such as LA NPDT when the product has to exist at the end.

What a product development consultant actually does

  • Feasibility: can this be made at a price that leaves a margin?
  • Route selection: 3D print, cast urethane, injection mold, sheet metal.
  • Cost modeling and target-price engineering before any CAD exists.
  • Supplier and contract-manufacturer selection and vetting.
  • Design reviews and rescue work on a project that stalled.
  • Regulatory path scoping for medical, electrical or childrens products.
  • Interim leadership for a company without an engineering manager.

When a consultant is the wrong hire

Where to find product development consultants

1. Full-service firms that sell scoped consulting

Most credible firms will sell a short paid feasibility or strategy engagement before a build. LA NPDT runs feasibility as a fixed-scope first stage so you can stop after it with a clear answer and no obligation. The advantage over an independent consultant is that the same team can execute the recommendation. The disadvantage is obvious and worth naming: the firm has an incentive to recommend building. Ask for the case where the answer was do not build it.

2. Independent veteran consultants

Former engineering directors and manufacturing leads who consult solo. Best for: unbiased second opinions, supplier vetting and rescue work. Find them through LinkedIn, industry associations such as PDMA, and referrals from your contract manufacturer. Watch for: deep expertise in one industry that does not transfer to yours.

3. Marketplaces: Upwork, Toptal, CAD Crowd, Kolabtree

Best for: bounded, well-specified tasks - a CAD model from a sketch, a DFM review, a schematic. Not for: owning a whole product. Vetting quality varies widely; Toptal and Kolabtree screen harder and charge more.

4. Free and low-cost public programs

Small Business Development Centers, SCORE mentors, MEP centers (the NIST Manufacturing Extension Partnership has a center in every state) and university engineering programs all provide advice at no or low cost. For an early-stage inventor these often answer the same questions a paid consultant would.

Frequently asked questions

How to vet a consultant in one call?

Which products have you taken to production, and what were the part counts and volumes?. Tell me about a project you advised that failed, and why. Do you have a financial relationship with any manufacturer you would recommend?.

What deliverable do I hold at the end - a memo, a cost model, a supplier shortlist?. What would make you tell me not to build this?. Will you put an hour cap on the engagement?

How much does a product development consultant cost?

In the US, independent consultants commonly charge 100 to 250 dollars an hour, with senior specialists in regulated fields higher. Many sell a fixed-scope feasibility package in the 1,500 to 6,000 dollar range, which is usually better value than open-ended hourly work because the deliverable is defined.

Do I need a consultant if I already have a manufacturer?

Sometimes yes. A manufacturer optimizes for what it can make on its own equipment. An independent review before you commit to tooling is cheap insurance against a design locked to one supplier at a bad price.

What is the difference between a consultant and a product development firm?

A consultant tells you what to do; a firm does it and is accountable for the result. If your project fails after advice, you own the failure. If it fails mid-build with a firm, the firm has to fix it. More buyer guides: medical device design companies , companies near me (local vs remote) and product development in Louisiana .
