When an on-demand manufacturer is the right call?
Your CAD is finished, toleranced, and reviewed for manufacturability. You know the material, finish, and process you want. You need 1 to 100 parts fast and price is the deciding factor. Nobody needs to make an engineering judgment for the part to work.
When you need a design-led firm instead?
You have a sketch, a napkin drawing, or a description, not CAD. A previous prototype worked but cannot be manufactured at a sane cost. The product mixes mechanical, electronic, and firmware work that has to fit in one enclosure. You need someone accountable for whether the thing works, not just for whether the part matches the file. You are heading toward tooling and need design for manufacturing done before the money is spent.
What a design-led firm does that a parts vendor cannot?
A parts vendor optimises one variable: making the geometry in the file. A development firm owns the questions that come before the file exists. Which mechanism actually solves the problem.
What it should cost at 5,000 units. Whether the wall thickness will warp. Which supplier can hold the tolerance.
Whether the battery, board, and enclosure can coexist. Those decisions determine whether the product ships, and none of them appear on an instant quote page.

Can I use both a development firm and an on-demand manufacturer?
Yes, and most well-run projects do. We design the part, then buy prototype parts wherever price and lead time are best, which is often Protolabs, Xometry, or a domestic machine shop. Ownership of the design stays with you. A firm that refuses to let you see or use the CAD elsewhere is a firm to avoid.
What should I send when I ask for a quote?
Whatever exists: sketches, photos of a mockup, a description of what it must do, the target user, the target price, and the quantity you expect in year one. You do not need CAD, a patent, or a finished spec to get a useful answer. If you have a previous prototype that failed, send that too; the failure usually tells us more than the drawing does.
