When an instant manufacturing quote is the wrong tool
Online manufacturing marketplaces price the file you upload. They cannot tell you the file is wrong. Here is how to know which problem you have before you pay for parts.

An instant manufacturing quote answers one question: what would it cost to make this exact file, right now. That is genuinely useful — and it is a much smaller question than the one most people are actually asking, which is whether this is the right part to make at all.

Three signals that you have a design problem, not a sourcing problem
- Parts keep arriving correct to the file and still do not work. The file is the problem.
- You cannot say what tolerance matters on the drawing. Then the supplier chooses for you, differently each time.
- Your quoted unit cost is fine at 10 pieces and impossible at 10,000. The design has not been through DFM.

Can you use both?
Yes, and most well-run programs do. Engineering decides what the part should be; the cheapest capable supplier makes it. We hand clients a package they can take to any marketplace, and plenty of our clients order their own parts from Xometry or Protolabs afterwards. That is a good outcome — the package is designed to be portable, not to lock you in.

Why do my instant quotes keep coming back expensive?
Quote engines price geometry. Thick walls, tight tolerances applied everywhere, unnecessary undercuts and exotic materials all raise the number without improving the product. A short design review usually removes most of that cost before you order again.
Does an instant quote tell me whether my design will work?
No. It confirms the part can be made on a given process and what that run costs. It says nothing about fit, strength, assembly, regulatory needs or whether the part is right for volume production.
How much does a design review cost compared with re-ordering parts?
A focused review is typically a few hundred to a few thousand dollars, against re-orders that repeat forever and tooling changes that start around $2,000 and climb. Reviewing first is almost always the cheaper sequence.
