Short answer: consumer products are won or lost on landed cost, so pick a firm that designs to a unit-cost target. For housewares, outdoor gear, personal care and small mechanical goods on a founder budget, a design-plus-engineering firm such as LA NPDT or Design 1st fits.

For overseas-sourced retail goods, Gembah. For connected consumer devices, Product Creation Studio. For brand-defining electronics, Whipsaw or Ammunition.

For research-led categories like personal care and healthcare, Delve. If you already have final CAD, skip design entirely and go to a contract manufacturer.

How we evaluated these firms

  • Do they design to a stated unit-cost target, or to an aesthetic brief only?
  • In-house engineering and prototyping, not brokered work.
  • Experience with the specific manufacturing process your product needs.
  • Support for certification and safety testing where the category requires it.
  • Shipped consumer products you can go buy.

Questions to ask a consumer product design firm

  • Will you design to my target landed cost, and will you show the cost model?
  • Which manufacturing process are you assuming, and why that one?
  • What certification or safety testing does my category require, and who manages it?
  • How many prototype iterations are inside the quoted fee?
  • Who owns the CAD and the supplier relationships afterwards?
  • Have you shipped a product in this exact category? Which retailer carried it?

Frequently asked questions

How much does consumer product design cost?

A simple molded consumer product typically runs 8,000 to 30,000 dollars from concept through manufacturing-ready CAD and a tested prototype. Add electronics and certification and 40,000 to 120,000 dollars is normal. Tooling is separate.

Should I design in the US and manufacture overseas?

For most consumer goods, yes. US design and engineering keeps iteration fast while the product is still changing; overseas tooling and production keeps unit cost competitive once the design is frozen. The handoff package has to be complete or the savings disappear in rework.

How long does a consumer product take to develop?

Roughly 3 to 6 months from concept to a production-ready package for a simple molded product, then 8 to 16 weeks for tooling and first articles. Connected devices with certification typically add 3 to 6 months. More buyer guides: medical device design companies , companies near me (local vs remote) and product development in Louisiana .
