Services

Product development services

Research, industrial design, mechanical and electrical engineering, prototyping, manufacturing and launch — bought as one program or one phase at a time, from a single team that has run more than 1,000 projects since 2015.

What product development services cover

Product development is the work between an idea and a product you can sell: research, design, engineering, prototyping, manufacturing and launch. Most companies sell one slice of that. We run the whole chain in one team, so nothing gets lost in a hand-off between a design studio, an electronics contractor and a factory.

A typical mechanical product runs $18,000 to $60,000 from first sketch to a working prototype. A connected product with electronics and firmware runs $45,000 to $150,000. You do not have to buy the whole chain — every phase below can be bought on its own.

Typical project
$18,000 – $60,000 mechanical; $45,000 – $150,000 connected
Typical timeline
4 – 9 months from idea to a production-ready design
Smallest engagement
A single phase — a concept, a prototype, a DFM review
Where the work happens
In-house in Ruston, Louisiana, US-based engineers

What is included, and what is not

Included in our product development services

  • Market and patent landscape research, and a go/no-go recommendation
  • Concept design, industrial design, renders and appearance models
  • Mechanical engineering, CAD and tolerance work
  • Electronics: schematic capture, PCB layout, firmware and certification prep
  • Prototyping, functional testing and design iteration
  • Design for manufacturing, tooling and first-article inspection
  • Short-run manufacturing and supplier management
  • Packaging, product photography, video and launch assets

What we do not do

  • Filing your patent — we prepare the drawings and prior-art work, your attorney files
  • High-volume mass production in-house; above short runs we manage vetted factories for you
  • Ongoing software hosting or SaaS operations after launch
  • Retail distribution, sales reps and fulfilment

The six phases, with real cost and time ranges

Ranges are what our own projects actually cost. Simple products land near the bottom; regulated, connected or high-precision products land at the top or above it.

How we work with you

Every project starts with a paid, fixed-scope first phase — usually discovery or concept design. It is small enough to be a low-risk test of working together, and it produces something you own whether or not you continue.

You work directly with the engineer doing the work. There is no account manager relaying questions, and there is a scheduled review at the end of each phase where you see the files, the test results and the next phase's cost before you commit to it.

You own the IP and the source files — CAD, PCB and firmware — as they are produced, not at the end. If you stop after any phase, you leave with everything paid for.

LA New Product Development Team did a great job designing my invention. The roadmap they designed is fully encompassing. This can be a daunting process for first time inventors and it was a great to have a team like this guiding me through each phase.
I really enjoyed working with LA NPDT. They are very responsible, professional, and provide high-end results. I liked the 2D and 3D CAD models, the renderings, and the 3D printing. I highly recommend the Team’s work and services.

Product development services FAQ

What do product development services actually include?
Everything between an idea and a product you can sell: market and patent research, concept and industrial design, mechanical and electrical engineering, firmware, prototyping and testing, design for manufacturing, tooling, short-run production, and launch assets. You can buy the full chain or any single phase.
How much do product development services cost?
A mechanical product typically runs $18,000 to $60,000 from first sketch to a working prototype. A connected product with electronics and firmware runs $45,000 to $150,000. Single phases start around $2,500 for discovery and $3,500 for concept design.
How long does product development take?
Four to nine months from idea to a production-ready design is normal for a consumer product. Regulated products — medical devices in particular — add three to twelve months for testing and documentation. Tooling adds another eight to sixteen weeks after the design is frozen.
Do you work with individual inventors, or only companies?
Both. About half our work is for inventors and startups on their first product; the rest is for established manufacturers, hospitals and corporations adding to a line. The process is the same; the size of the first phase is not.
Who owns the design and the IP?
You do. CAD, PCB files, firmware source and renders transfer to you as each phase is paid for, not at the end of the project. We sign an NDA before you send anything.
Can you handle just one part, like prototyping or DFM?
Yes. Every phase in the table above is sold on its own, and a large share of our work is picking up a design someone else started — a CAD file that will not manufacture, or a prototype that failed testing.

Tell us what you are building

Send us the idea, a sketch or an existing design. You get a phased plan with a cost range for each phase, and a call with the engineer who would do the work — not a salesperson.
